So I’ve been meaning to redesign this blog but haven’t had the time. Up until now I’ve been using Thematic as a starting point. It’s white and simple and makes a for a good launching point for theme templating design. It’s also free. But then a few weeks ago there was this brouhaha surrounding theme designer Chris Pearson and his stance on the wordpress license. Anyway I think it got resolved amicably but I got interested in his Thesis theme. I wanted to try it out and see what it was like. Unfortunately you have to pay for it. But there’s a 30 day money back guarantee. Anyway since I’ve been setting up a few wordpress sites for friends and family I thought I’d spring for the developer’s license and see what was up with it.
First off, it’s got a hell of a lot of customization options which is nice. Most of the stuff included is stuff I’d have to code myself in Thematic or at least have to google and do some copying and pasting. I haven’t fully explored all the options yet but hopefully when I do you’ll see them on my redesigned site.
UPDATE: Don’t know if I need an actual “UPDATE” header to this since I’m doing this on the day of the original post but I did some cursory reading and found that the issue between wordpress and Thesis hasn’t really been amicably settled regarding the issue of GPL. As such I’m probably going to ask for a refund on the Thesis theme and try out the Genesis theme. It seems to be recommended by the people at wordpress and also I guess one of the good things about the Genesis theme is that it allows you to use the theme on an unlimited number of sites without paying some kind of additional fee as opposed to Thesis. I guess I’d rather pay less and be on the side of GPL.
